understanding lyff
You decide who sees what and when.
Every document, note and detail in your vault has its own Sharing Setting. Nothing is shared until you say so, and nothing stays shared a moment longer than you want it to.
What is a Sharing Setting?
Every single item in your vault, a document, an account detail, a note, has its own Sharing Setting. It's the one thing that decides who can see that item and when. There's no vault-wide switch and no default that quietly shares more than you meant to, every item starts Private, and stays that way until you choose otherwise.
Seven ways to share, or none at all
For anything you do choose to share, you pick exactly who and exactly when.
Private stays private
Anything left as Private uses genuine Zero-Knowledge encryption, so it isn't just hidden from other people, Lyff itself cannot see it either. Anything you share uses a different, managed form of encryption built to make that sharing possible. The full detail on how that works lives on our Encryption and Storage page.
Change your mind, any time
A Sharing Setting isn't a one-time decision. Circumstances change, so you can open any item and adjust who sees it, or when, whenever you like. Tighten it, loosen it, or switch it back to Private entirely, it takes effect immediately.
A quick example
Say you're storing three things: your passport, a life insurance policy, and a letter to your kids.
Your passport might stay Private, just for you. Your insurance policy could be shared with your partner, a Lyff Guardian, straight away, so they can find it the moment they need it. Your letter might be set to release only through the Lyff Release process, so it stays sealed until it's genuinely needed.
Three items, three completely different rules, all sitting in the same vault.
The Lyff Release Process
What Is the Lyff Release Process?
Proper documentation
A death or incapacity certificate, along with photo ID from whoever is making the request.
A witnessed declaration
A statutory declaration, signed and witnessed by a Justice of the Peace. No Grant of Probate required.
Human verification
A real person at Lyff reviews everything before anything is unlocked. Never an automated decision alone.
Whichever of your Guardians or Custodians completes the process first, the items you've classified for the Lyff Release process unlock for all of them, and the others are notified straight away, so nothing sits waiting unnecessarily.
Inactivity Safeguard
A welfare check first, a handover second
Nothing is ever released on a single missed email. Here's exactly what happens if you go quiet.
We check in with you
A gentle email, then a follow-up email and SMS over about two weeks.
We check in with your Guardian
If we still can't reach you, we ask your Guardian if they've heard from you.
We check in with your Custodian
If needed, your professional adviser is notified too, as a further check.
A human verifies before anything opens
A real person at Lyff confirms what's happened before any access is released.
You're always in control. Responding to any check-in, or simply logging in, stops the whole process and resets it immediately. And even once access is confirmed, your Guardian or Custodian only ever sees what's in their folder — never your full vault.
Why we built this
Most tools help you store things. Almost none help you know when to hand them over.
Storing your will, your passwords, your wishes, is the easy part. The hard part is timing: how does anyone know when it's actually time for a Guardian to step in, rather than a moment too early, or far too late? Most digital vaults leave that entirely up to you to sort out manually, if they think about it at all.
The Inactivity Safeguard is our answer: a graduated, human-verified process that only ever hands over scoped access after genuine attempts to reach you, and a real person confirming it's warranted. Not a single missed email. Not an algorithm making the call alone.
"My father had dementia, no advance care directive, and a family scattered across states trying to make decisions with information that was never written down. Lyff is the safeguard I wish he'd had."
— Georgia, Founder, Lyff
A person, not just a process
A real person at Lyff verifies before anything opens, so nothing is ever released on an algorithm's say-so alone.
Scoped, not all-or-nothing
Every item in your vault has its own Sharing Setting. Even once access opens, your Guardian or Custodian only ever sees what you've chosen to share with them, never your full vault.
Yours to stop, any time
Responding to a single check-in, or simply logging in, resets the whole process immediately. You're always in control.
Don't have a big family or a long list of people to nominate?
The safeguard doesn't depend on having one. If you don't yet have a Guardian or Custodian, you can nominate an Emergency Contact instead, and Lyff still proceeds with an extra waiting period built in as a further layer of protection. Peace of mind here was never meant to require a big support network.

Common questions
What people ask us most.
Is my data really secure from hackers?
Your vault is protected with AES-256 encryption, the same standard used by banks, and hosted on Australian servers under Australian privacy law.
What happens if I forget my password and get locked out?
For anything you've marked Private, you'll need your Recovery Key to get back in, so keep it somewhere safe. We genuinely can't recover a Private item for you under any circumstances, that's what makes it Private. For anything you've shared with a Lyff Guardian or Lyff Custodian, there's a separate recovery process available, since Lyff holds the key material needed to help you regain access to those items.
Will my information ever be sold?
No. Lyff doesn't sell your data, ever.
What if family members disagree about who should have access?
Access is entirely your decision. Only the Guardians and Custodians you nominate can ever be granted access, and only under the terms you set. You can change or revoke that at any time. No one else can change your wishes.
I'm not very tech-savvy, is this hard to use?
Lyff is designed to be simple for people of all technical abilities. Most people get the essentials done in about ten minutes. If you'd rather have someone walk you through it, our paid Concierge sessions offer step-by-step help.
Will my subscription price increase over time?
Current pricing is available on the Pricing page. Any changes to your specific plan would always be communicated in advance.
Some things are private and some things are for sharing.
Keep what you need private and set in motion what gets shared if something were to happen to you. It’s your choice, it’s your vault.
