Not everything in Lyff needs the same kind of protection, so it doesn't get the same kind of protection. Which one applies depends entirely on what you choose to share, and with whom.
My Vault: Zero-Knowledge
Anything you keep in My Vault, and haven't chosen to share, is encrypted so that only you can ever open it. Not Lyff, not our engineers, not anyone. We simply don't hold the key.
The honest trade-off: if you ever lose both your password and your Recovery Key, those items can't be recovered, by us or by anyone else. That's not a flaw we're glossing over, it's what real privacy actually requires.
Shared Items: Managed Encryption
Anything you choose to share with a Lyff Guardian or Lyff Custodian works differently. It's still encrypted, but in a way that allows it to be verified and released through the proper process if you're ever unreachable.
This is what lets the people you trust actually help when it counts, without needing your password, and without one lost code locking them out permanently.
A Safety Net, Not A Trigger

The Inactivity Safeguard is a gentle check-in system, not a countdown to unlocking your vault. Here's exactly what it does, in order.
We check in with you
If you've gone quiet for the period you set, we reach out, more than once, and always gently.
We ask your Guardian to check on you
If we still haven't heard back, we ask your Lyff Guardian to confirm you're okay, nothing more.
Verification, only if needed
Only once required documentation is submitted and verified does anything move toward release.
Failed contact alone never grants anyone access to your vault. It only ever starts a conversation, first with you, then with your Guardian, well before anything is shared with anyone.

What people ask us most
Is my data really secure from hackers?
Yes. Your vault uses AES-256 encryption, the same standard used by banks, hosted on Australian servers under Australian privacy law. Items you keep private in My Vault go a step further with zero-knowledge encryption, explained above, so not even Lyff can open them.
What happens if I forget my password and get locked out?
It depends what's lost. With your Recovery Key, you can regain access yourself. Without it, our support team can help you recover your account through identity verification, but that only restores your account, not My Vault's contents. Those use zero-knowledge encryption, so if both your password and Recovery Key are ever lost, that content can't be recovered by anyone, including us. Store your Recovery Key somewhere safe.
Will my information ever be used for advertising?
No. Lyff doesn't sell or use your data for advertising, ever.
What if family members disagree about who should have access?
Access is entirely your decision, not theirs. Every item has its own Sharing Setting, and only the Lyff Guardians and Lyff Custodians you personally nominate can ever be granted access, only under the terms you set.
I'm not very tech-savvy, is this hard to use?
Not at all. Lyff is built to be simple for people of every technical ability. Most people finish the three steps above and have the essentials done in about ten minutes.
What if I'm just unreachable for an innocent reason, like travelling?
That's exactly why the Inactivity Safeguard starts gently. It checks in with you first, more than once, and only reaches out to your Lyff Guardian if you haven't responded. Nothing is ever shared just because we couldn't reach you, so a missed check-in while you're travelling or simply busy won't put anything at risk.
