Recovery & Access

Recover access.
Keep control.

Understand your account password, vault passphrase and Recovery Key, so you know what to do if you have trouble getting back into your Lyff.

Your Recovery Key works with your authenticated subscriber account and MFA. It cannot open your vault by itself.
Two different steps

Sign in to your account. Unlock your private vault.

Your account password and vault passphrase do different jobs. Resetting one does not reset the other.

Your password signs you in to Lyff, alongside MFA. Your vault passphrase unlocks your encrypted vault. Your Recovery Key provides a way to recover your existing vault keys and set a new passphrase, after you have signed in and completed MFA.

Start with the right problem

What is stopping you getting back in?

Account access and vault recovery have different requirements. Choose the situation that matches yours.

01

Forgot your password?

Use the password-reset option on the sign-in screen. Resetting your account password does not unlock your vault, change its passphrase or replace MFA.

02

Forgot your vault passphrase?

If you have your Recovery Key, sign in to your subscriber account, complete MFA and follow Vault Recovery to set a new passphrase.

03

Cannot complete MFA?

Visit Help or contact Lyff for guidance with account access. A Recovery Key does not bypass MFA, and contacting support does not give staff the ability to decrypt your vault files.

Never send your password, vault passphrase, Recovery Key or MFA codes to support, a chatbot or another person helping you.
How vault recovery works

Your Recovery Key is one part of the process.

Recovery uses your existing vault keys. It protects those keys with a new vault passphrase, so your existing documents, including Private items, remain decryptable.

1. Sign in and complete MFA

Use your own authenticated subscriber account. An appointed Guardian or Custodian’s account cannot replace this step.

2. Use your Recovery Key

The key recovers your existing vault keys locally in your browser. Your Recovery Key alone is not a sign-in method.

3. Set a new vault passphrase

Your existing vault keys are protected with the new passphrase. Recovery does not appoint a new recipient or change item permissions.

Private stays private

Recovery keeps your existing vault and permissions.

Private documents Remain decryptable by you
Guardian or Custodian role No recovery bypass
Selected sharing Permissions stay unchanged
Account password reset Does not unlock the vault
Lyff staff Cannot decrypt your vault files
An important difference

Recovery and Release Later have different purposes.

Recovering your own access does not create access for someone else.

Vault recovery

You sign in to your own account, complete MFA and use your Recovery Key to recover your vault keys and set a new passphrase.

Release Later

An appointed Guardian or Custodian uses their own account to request only the selected items assigned to them for incapacity or passing, through Lyff’s reviewed release process.

A Guardian or Custodian cannot use their role, their own account or your Recovery Key alone to recover your vault. Private items are excluded from Release Later.
Your Recovery Key

Keep a secure copy outside your vault.

Choose a secure location you can access independently. Do not rely on a copy stored only inside the vault you may need to recover.

Protect it like an important credential.

Do not paste it into chat, email it to support or include it in screenshots. Enter it only in Lyff’s authenticated recovery flow.

If you forget your vault passphrase and do not have your Recovery Key, do not assume Lyff or an appointed person can restore access. Staff cannot bypass vault encryption. Contact support for guidance about your account.

Missing a Lyff Check-In does not start recovery.

Check-In is a six-monthly review reminder. Missing it does not unlock your account, contact your Guardian or Custodian, change permissions or release information.

Recovery questions

Clear answers before you need them.

What happens if I forget my account password?

Use the password-reset option on the sign-in screen. You still need to meet the account’s authentication requirements. Resetting the account password does not unlock your vault, change its passphrase or re-wrap your vault keys.

What if I forget my vault passphrase?

If you have your Recovery Key, sign in to your subscriber account, complete MFA and use Vault Recovery to set a new passphrase. The Recovery Key alone cannot open the vault.

Can I recover my vault without signing in or completing MFA?

No. The Recovery Key flow requires your authenticated subscriber account and MFA. If you cannot complete those steps, contact support about account access. Do not send your Recovery Key or MFA codes.

Can my Guardian or Custodian use my Recovery Key?

Their appointment and their own account do not give them access to your recovery flow. The Recovery Key alone cannot open your vault. For incapacity or passing, appointed people follow Release Later for the selected items assigned to them.

Can Lyff staff unlock my encrypted vault?

No. Lyff staff cannot decrypt your private vault files or bypass vault encryption. Support can provide guidance with account access, but cannot promise access to encrypted files when the required vault credentials are unavailable.

Will my existing Private documents still open after successful recovery?

Yes. Recovery restores your existing vault keys and protects them with a new passphrase. The underlying vault keys do not change, so your existing documents, including Private items, remain decryptable.

Does recovery change my sharing or release instructions?

No. Recovery does not change item permissions, appoint someone new or turn Private items into shared items. Share Now and Release Later instructions remain separate.

What if I lose both my vault passphrase and my Recovery Key?

Do not assume there is a staff, Guardian or Custodian bypass. Contact support for guidance about your account, but Lyff cannot promise to restore encrypted vault contents without the required vault credentials.

Does a missed Check-In trigger recovery or release?

No. Check-In is a review reminder only. Missing it does not begin recovery, release information, change permissions or automatically contact your Guardian or Custodian.

Prepare your way back in

Know your credentials. Keep your recovery details safe.

Understand which password signs you in, which passphrase unlocks your vault and where you have stored your Recovery Key. A little preparation now can make a difficult moment easier to manage.
